Levin ISBN: 1855753006 Publisher: Karnac Books Release Date: September, 2004 Bioscience book rank: 311296	With a title like "Mapping the Mind" and a publication date of 2004 or 2003 you'd expect this book to include the recent explosion of information about functional neuroanatomy. However, it is a reprint of a book first published in 1991. That makes it of primary interest to people interested in the history of efforts to integrate psychotherapy and neuroscience (for whom it deserves a higher rating). I am writing a doctoral dissertation attempting a current integration and I was disappointed by this book. Mapping the Mind: The Intersection of Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience is not an easy book to read, but it is a hard one to put down! It explains much about how our mind works, and how this in turn relates to brain functioning. Our psyche (heart) and our brain are twin functions; the former springs from the latter. The author of this book has taken the time to master psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and brain science, and he puts his ideas into clear English, giving references for his conclusions, so we can decide how likely his speculations might be correct. This seems to me a pioneering book. I also learned recently that it has been translated into Japanese (as Kokoro No Chizu, published by Minerva Shobo Publishers of Kyoto, Japan). The Japanese translation is extremely well done by Taketomo, Nishikawa, and Mizuta. Very few books seem as rewarding as this one, since what could be more important to us than understanding how we tick?!
